Learn How To Read Your Credit Report

Each credit bureau (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) has their own set of credit report standards. But, there are some overall universal standards, such as those listed here.

Credit Report Sections

The top section on the first page your credit report contains your personal information, such as:
  • Your name
  • Home address
  • Social security number
  • Date of birth

The second section on the first page of your credit report contains either the start of your credit summary or your public records information. Which one is first and which one is placed second depends on where you pull your credit report from and which credit bureau you are using.

Either way, the credit summary section contains a summary of all of open, closed, derogatory and collection credit accounts. For example, if you have three credit cards and a student loan, this section would state how many accounts you have and how much is owed in total for all of these accounts - not the account details. The public records section contains information such as bankruptcy filing, judgments, property and tax liens.

The next section of your credit report is the account history section, sometimes also referred to as the credit history section (this section might also go by another name depending on the credit report), which contains all of your account details. Including:

  • Creditors name
  • Account number
  • Type of account (individual, joint, authorized user, etc)
  • Date the account was opened
  • Number of months the account was reported
  • Date of last activity (date of last payment or account change)
  • Credit limit
  • Amount owed
  • Payment information (including late and past due payments)
  • Type of credit account (credit card, mortgage, etc.)

The next section of your credit report is the inquiry section. This section contains a list of all businesses that have reviewed your credit file in the past 24 months. Please note that your current creditors can also periodically review your credit report without first notifying you.

The last section, normally referred to as the additional information section, is located either on the first page of your credit report (below your personal information section), before the inquiry section or after the inquiry section. The additional information section consists of previous addresses and employers that were reported by your creditors.

  • Credit Report Tip

Always make sure that your name, address, social security number and date of birth are correct. If they are not, correct this information with the credit bureaus as quickly as possible to rule out fraud, ID theft and credit bureau errors.
